Dave Barrett, 71, spent 45 years in charge of the baseball program, was a longtime football assistant
Add in 28 years as an assistant football coach and 14 years as athletic director, and Barrett has worn more hats, seen more games and influenced more lives than anyone could have imagined.“People always said you’d know when it was time to retire, and it’s time,” said Barrett, who had pared his schedule to just baseball coach the last decade. “Coaching is an all-in deal, physically and mentally. It’s what your players deserve.
Barrett was Oceanside’s defensive coordinator for 16 football seasons, winning state championships in 2007 and 2009. He was on John Carroll’s staff for all 13 CIF San Diego Section titles.“He is just an exceptional person,” Carroll said. “He has worked with kids year-round in multiple sports. His ability to manage the athletic department, handling any situation that came up, while working with baseball and football was incredible.
Barrett, who played baseball and football at Oceanside High School, MiraCosta College and Cal Lutheran, said he plans to keep playing music, serving his church and being involved in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. His granddaughter Manna, who grew up in Japan, is living with the Barretts so she can graduate from Oceanside High School.
