Re: “In strengthening Canada’s health care, we must maintain employer-sponsored drug plans,” . Carolyne Eagan argues that any move to pharmacare should retain employer-sponsored plans because replacing them “would have adverse consequences, including reduced coverage, lost tax revenue, slower access to new drugs, and higher costs for employers, unions, and families.” Let’s look at these arguments.
Higher costs for employers, unions, and families: Employers would no longer have to worry about either running drug plans themselves or paying someone to do so. Unions wouldn’t have to worry about bargaining for drug coverage and employees wouldn’t have to worry about losing coverage if they change jobs. Families wouldn’t have to pay the copays or deductibles that often are part of a private insurance plan.
