The Senate's only black Republican said his 2022 reelection campaign will be his last race
His remarks to the Post and Courier reiterate a vow he made in 2014, after he won his election to replace Republican Sen. Jim DeMint, who resigned and became president of the Heritage Foundation. Scott at the time said that wanted to complete DeMint's term, and subsequently serve two full six-year terms.
Under President Donald Trump’s presidency, Scott has been one of the most outspoken Republican senators to condemn racist rhetoric. Most recently, Scott condemned Trump’s attack on four congresswomen of color, criticizing Trump’s tweets that the freshman lawmakers should “go home” as racially offensive.
He also played a prominent role in sinking two of Trump’s judicial nominees - Thomas Farr for district judge in North Carolina and Ryan Bounds for the Ninth Circuit - over their views and actions on race.
