The opening third of the Alabama football 2022-23 season is over. The Crimson Tide ended it on a high note.
Welcoming Vanderbilt for the start of Southeastern Conference play, Nick Saban saw one of his team’s more complete performances since blanking Utah State in the opener. The offense found the big plays it had been lacking and the defense suffocated a rebuilt Commodores’ attack against head coach Clark Lea and freshman quarterback AJ Swann during a 55-3 rout at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
Utilizing more hurry-up than in weeks past, Alabama showcased five pass catchers out wide in its formations. Vanderbilt cornerbacks stayed downfield, giving cushion for quick passes that Young happily completed early. Brooks started the Tide’s first drive with four-straight completions, three of which were just barely past the first-down marker. When Vandy started to look underneath, Brooks went deep.
The Tide produced 10 plays of 20-plus yards as Young had more passing yards in the opening half-hour than in any single game this season.The key part of Vanderbilt’s resurgence has been an offense that’s produced 436.8 yards a game, a roughly even split between the ground and the air. Part of the blowout in Bryant-Denny Stadium occurred, in part, to a swarming Tide front that never let a freshman quarterback get comfortable.
The defense, which held Vanderbilt to 120 total yards, looked about as textbook as the Tide could’ve hoped. The front seven swarmed Vanderbilt’s backfield and gave routs no time to develop. Much of Vanderbilt’s offense was designed to attack the edges and even when Alabama didn’t contain it, the team speed was just too much for the Commodores.
