Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a tornado watch for Ottawa and the capital region.

The agency had been under a thunderstorm “watch” for most of the morning.

At 12:19 p.m., the agency said meteorologists are tracking a line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing very strong wind gusts. “Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes.”Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.Article contentTo report severe weather in Ontario, send an email to [email protected] or tweet reports using #ONStorm.A tornado watch is a preliminary stage, followed by a tornado warning if warranted. The agency notes tornadoes can generate winds up to 100 km/h.
