Matthew Campbell does not remember attacking his terrified victim
A thug wielding a baseball bat stormed into a supported housing property and smashed a family member in the face. Matthew Campbell, 32, left his victim with a broken eye socket and cheekbone - but claimed he had no memory of what had happened.
Preston Crown Court heard the day before the incident Campbell had been caught in the crossfire of a drugs taxing - where drug dealers steal each other’s drugs - and suffered a knife wound to his lip. On December 2, 2020, he returned to the flat with a baseball bat and burst into the living room, shouting, "right, where's them two lads?"Three men, who were completely unconnected to the events of the previous day, were sitting in the living room.
In a victim impact statement he said Campbell had "banged through my door", adding: "I dread to think what would have happened if I hadn't got away." He said he now feels anxious about seeing the defendant as he fears reprisals for making a statement. Daniel Harman, defending, said Campbell has suffered mental health problems for many years and self medicated with temazepam and alcohol, causing him to have blackouts. He said: "He was genuine in looking for these men but they had long gone - they were not going to be there 24 hours later, in their balaclavas."
