The derogatory term 'squaw' will be removed from 80 places throughout California

Three locations in San Diego County have been renamed as part of a national effort to remove a derogatory term for a Native American woman from nearly 650 geographic features across the country.

Effective immediately, each of the new names omits the word “squaw” — an ethnic and sexist slur for Indigenous women.“I feel a deep obligation to use my platform to ensure that our public lands and waters are accessible and welcoming,” Haaland said. “That starts with removing racist and derogatory names that have graced federal locations for far too long.”
