Tens of thousands of Calgarians filled 9th Avenue on Sunday morning for the city\u0027s annual Pride parade.
‘We need education — and this is it’
Attendee Dwayne Brooks said the parade and Pride as a whole is an important educational piece. The 66-year-old said he’s seen Pride and public support for the queer community grow a lot in his decades attending the event, noting that it helps keep “the new generation up to date of what we’ve done in the past and what we’re striving for in the future.”This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.Folks of all ages attended and participated in the parade.
“They’re the ones that are more progressive, right?” Glenn said. “They don’t judge people anymore like us old folks used to do. ‘They/Them’ — it’s just normal for them. They come from a different place that’s more pure, more love.” Another participant, Julie Halpin, said the event is an important showcase of diversity and “everyone deserves to be loved.”
“Boxes are not made for humans. AI fits boxes, computers fit boxes. Humans don’t,” Halpin said. “So let everybody be who they are, and just give them respect because they’re human.
