A napping walrus forced the last-minute cancellation of New Year’s Eve fireworks in Scarborough.
Council leader Steve Siddons said the decision was taken to call off Saturday’s display to avoid causing “distress” to Thor, a wandering Artic walrusA cordon was erected to ensure tourists did not disturb the animal, believed to be the same one sighted on the Hampshire coast three weeks ago.Mr Siddons said he was “really disappointed that we’ve had to cancel the fireworks but the welfare of the walrus has to take precedence”.
“It is extremely rare that an Arctic walrus should come ashore on the Yorkshire coast. The creature needs time to rest and recuperate before it continues its journey.”praised the “magnificent” decision, adding: “You have made the nights of all who love wildlife in the UK. RSPCA inspector Geoff Edmond said the walrus did not appear to be sick or injured, and encouraged people to enjoy the sight from a respectful distance.
