This North Lake Tahoe restaurant is carrying on a 450-year-old ice cream tradition. Here's the scoop (pun intended).
A tradition dating back to the Medici family
The Lake Tahoe restaurant only serves soft serve ice cream, a style most similar to the gelato you’d buy from an Italian street vendor parked in Rome’s Piazza San Pietro. While the two aren’t exactly the same — traditional gelato tends to use more milk, while soft serve ice cream relies heavier on cream — they’re close, and that’s exactly why Old Town Tap serves it.
Modern-day gelato began, as many creative Italian pursuits did, with the Medici family in the 16th century, according to most sources. While it’s tricky to know precisely who first combined gelato, sea salt and olive oil , it’s easy to think it was during the Medici era, when combining expensive ingredients such as salt, ice and sugar would have been an easy way to display the family’s wealth and economic influence during social events. And as for adding the olive oil, well, it was Italy, after all.
