Tahoe's lesser-known distance trail is one of the first to melt every spring and offers surprisingly good views, considering it's next to a 65 mph highway.
s shoulder season, when most trails are still covered in snow or dotted with patches of knee-deep mud, the Tahoe-Pyramid Trail is sunny and green, with little foot traffic and cool breezes drifting up from the snowmelt-fed river. And at least a half-dozen vintage cars are permanently parked on the hillside, standing as a decaying testament to the dangerous 1920s highway the trail now follows.
But that will change soon, or so the Tahoe-Pyramid Trail organization hopes. “These sections are proving to be the toughest because there are so many with a stake in this expansion,” says Tahoe-Pyramid Trail volunteer Blair O’Neil, “including government agencies, NGOs, Union Pacific, Washoe and Storey counties, NDOT , as well as residents and businesses in those areas, and private landowners and ranch owners.
But hikers won't be tackling 59 miles in a single day, so they should instead prioritize the best sections. While most hikers probably already know the section between Tahoe City and Palisades Tahoe, which follows a paved bike path, the best Lake Tahoe day-hiking trail is just a few miles east of Truckee, at the end of unmarked Hirschdale Road.
The fact that the Tahoe-Pyramid Trail's terrain is steep didn't surprise anyone — it’s been causing transportation challenges for as long as anyone's been trying to traverse it. That's evidenced by the half-dozen crashed cars along this 4.1-mile-long section that date back more than 60 years. And more pieces are probably out there, for anyone who cares to look closely.
