Third places are those once plentiful institutions, and organizations, that connect us to our neighbors. These third places include churches, temples, mosques as well as community service organizations, social clubs, etc. However, membership for all of these institutions is declining. Gallupa 20% decline in faith-based membership since 1999, with half of the decline occurring in the current decade.
First, plan. Just as we plan for financial security, we must plan what we will do in retirement to stay engaged, relevant, and socially healthy. For example, long before your last day at work, identify and explore groups and activities you will participate in upon retirement.
