A Chaplain And Medical Anthropologist Explain How You Can Spiritually Sustain Healthcare Workers During The COVID-19 Pandemic

As healthcare resources are stretched beyond their limits due to COVID-19, it is conceivable that Americans whose chronic conditions are getting worse may not get the care they desperately need. They will be competing with COVID-19 patients for a finite number of intensive care unit beds and critical medical material like ventilators.

Specifically, virtual care should allow for management of patient symptoms, review of medication lists, and discussions about the timing of necessary tests and services. It will be critical that mental health therapy and addiction treatment services through telehealth are also covered by public and private payers.

While this is a good first step, future appropriations should look to increase funding for Older Americans Act programs and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program to support the nutrition needs of vulnerable Americans. In addition, health insurers such as Medicare Advantage plans have an opportunity to offer supplemental benefits to members such as meals and in-home support services.
