After an intimate civil ceremony on a houseboat in Amsterdam, Love Stories founder Marloes Hoedeman and Eric Bijlsma staged an unforgettable celebration on a fleet of dhows off the coast of Kenya.
Marloes Hoedeman wasn’t looking for love when she met Eric Bijlsma in 2012. At the time, the Dutch stylist was eyeing a move into interior design, having spent almost 10 years styling homes for magazines including the Dutch editions of.
Two children, James and Lola, shortly followed, but marriage wasn’t a priority. “When you have children together, that’s the most amazing way of showing that you are a team,” says Hoedeman. “And for the older children, they were already getting used to a new brother and sister coming into this family, as well as a stepmother. Marriage for me wasn’t a thing.
Bijlsma had other ideas. In September 2019, the couple, who are gregarious hosts, decided to throw a party for 80 friends and family in the garden of their holiday home in Sardinia. “There was no reason – it was just because we felt that since everyone had had babies, we never really partied anymore,” says Hoedeman. After a busy day spent prepping, the couple went to dinner at Giagoni, their favourite restaurant in nearby San Pantaleo, a picturesque old town in the centre of the Italian island.
Naturally, the party the next day turned into an impromptu engagement celebration – and ultimately comprised their last big get-together before the pandemic struck in early 2020, putting their nascentplans on hold. It was only when the family escaped to Lamu, a small fishing port off the coast of Kenya, for several months in 2021, that they considered it as a wedding location. “We wanted it to be a magical treat for all our friends, to show them this incredible place,” Hoedeman recalls.
In the meantime, there was a civil ceremony to organise. They chose a canal boat in their hometown of Amsterdam for the official wedding in October 2022, with immediate family and several witnesses joining them for lobster burgers and chips on the barge. They followed up with a party at Libertine, a favourite restaurant in the city, where all their friends came to toast them with Champagne and a festive croquembouche tower.
