The Browns took a chance in making York the highest-drafted kicker since 2016, and the only kicker selected in this year’s draft. York proved them right on Sunday.

Only adding to the lore is the fact that it’s the first season opener the Browns have won since 2004, and they did it after quarterback Baker Mayfield tried to lead a last-second drive for Carolina.During warmups and throughout training camp, he regularly boomed kicks from 60-plus yards out -- that includes on Sunday when he was nailing 70 yarders in warmups.
“One thing that jumped out to me was his confidence,” Priefer said this week, recounting evaluating York before the draft. “He has a lot of confidence. He came across, I think some coaches thought he was a little bit cocky at the combine; I never saw that. I just saw a young man -- he is young now; he just turned 21 a few months ago -- that is extremely confident in his abilities, knows he has work to do and he is humble enough to know that he has to go out and prove it week in and week out.
