A recent social media video showing a lengthy lineup was no rarity, say organizers.

“We’ve noticed that the faces of people coming into the food bank have been different,” she said, noting a large increase in younger, employed clients, as well as those with post-secondary degrees. The number of first-time users at Fort York remains high, at 92 new households a week.

“A year or two ago, it was COVID. Now I have to believe pretty firmly that it’s grocery prices,” said Harry Compton, food bank manager at Oasis Dufferin Community Centre, about the similar increase in clients he’s seen there. “The lineup goes all the way down the block and around the corner,” he added. “It’s a bit intimidating and you second-guess if you’re going to be able to meet the need that day.”

Mitchell Tremblay, 40, used to visit the Fort York Food Bank from 2017 to 2021. He was shocked to see the recent video on social media. “There would be lineups in there,” he recalled from his days using the site, “but never anything out the door.”
