Reprising her Tony-nominated role that she played on Broadway, Olga Merediz plays Abuela Claudia in the Warner Bros film adaptation of In The Heights.
, Merediz has a special connection to the song. ““Paciencia y Fe” is like a prayer,” she says. “It means hold on. Hold steadfast. You can do this. It's the immigrant anthem. Work is hard, Life is hard but with patience and faith, you can do it.”
That is something that immigrants can give to the community—our sense of family, our loving ways, our stories, our sense of connection. Sometimes the United States can be isolating and cold. Everyone is working so hard. It’s every person for themselves. This community, exemplified by Abuela, relies on each other. They need each other and Abuela is always there when you need her. She offers sustenance, food, and advice.
