Dior’s latest collaboration with Mystery Ranch balances practicality with design panache
You’re probably sick of the G-word by now, and to be honest, I don’t blame you. It’s been the talking point of Tik Toks and the Twitter-sphere since we were allowed out the house for longer than an hour. Hiking boots have left campsites for the concrete jungle, and you can spot more fleeces in an East London pub than on a National Trust hiking trail. It’s the trend that won’t die; in fact, it’s only just approaching its proverbial peak.
Lockdown cemented the need for garms that are comfortable and pleasing on the eye, and the fact that this trend is yet to expire proves how we want it to stay. After all, who these days wants to wearthat causes a sigh of relief as soon as it’s taken off? Combine this with a collective obsession with being outdoors after months of being locked indoors, and you’ll start to understand why we’ve all started dressing like Bear Grylls.
As part of Kim Jones’ spring/summer ’23 collection, the designer looked to Christian Dior’s love of the countryside as inspiration. Alongside hiking trainers, mesh pullovers and fisherman’s waistcoats were accessories that could take you from your local park to a week in the wilderness, including an updated take on the famed Saddle bag, with a double-zipped compartment and Nylon jacquard shoulder strap. Prime for holding some protein-packed walking snacks whether you’re in the sticks or not.
The Gallagator backpack, for example, is equipped for off-trail adventures. With a Y-shaped three-zip closure, you can quickly access its multiple compartments, and its adjustable compression straps allow for a comfortable fit. When the weather takes a turn, just pull out its water-repellent hooded cover. Who knows, its practicality could even tempt you to plan an expedition – or more likely, a cushty weekend in the Cotswolds.
