Outgoing Executive Director Lydia Houck tells Sheldon MacLeod what their organization is hoping to see in the new Memorandum of Understanding between the province and its 10 universitiesHALIFAX, N.S. — Students haven’t traditionally been considered full partners when it comes to the Memorandum of Understanding between the province and its 10 universities.

. Lydia Houck is the outgoing Executive Director of Students Nova Scotia. Thank you again for being available and thank you for the role that you've held over the last couple of years.: This Memorandum of Understanding — what are we talking about here?I know it's not necessarily the most intuitive term to break down, but essentially this MOU between the government and Nova Scotia’s 10 universities dictates all sorts of key pieces of the university system.

Our recommendation within the context of this MOU is that universities be required to not only implement but also publicly promote sort of a cohort model of tuition. And what that would mean is that students at the beginning of their program would be given the full cost of their program over the course of the four years, or whatever that might be, so they know how much they're going to be paying. And that doesn't mean that the next group of students couldn't pay a higher rate.
