Marking a milestone The City of St. John’s held a dockside celebration on the St. John’s waterfront on Saturday, Sept. 9 to mark the 150th anniversary of the Holland America cruise line. With his ship in the background, Holland America Zaandam, Capt. Michiel Willems presented a plaque in recognition of the role the city’s tourism department played with the cruise line's visits to the city over the years.

Other highlights during the week include a performance at the Arts and Culture Centre in St. John’s on Sept. 22, Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra, Under the Big Top, and performances at the Arts and Culture Centre on Sunday from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. of Sunday at Cirque and 7 p.m. for Animal. There is also a double bill set for Saturday at the LSPU Hall of Rooted and Gap of 42.A celebration of culture, featuring music, food, and comedy, will be held on Sept. 19, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at St.

The awards are held annually to recognize excellence in writing by authors residing in the province. The long list has already been announced and the short list of nominees for the E.J. Pratt Family Poetry Award and the Power Family Non-Fiction Award will be announced on Sept. 14.
