“Trump followed this same pattern with Paul Manafort and Michael Cohen—praising them, saying, ‘Don’t worry, I’ve got your back,’” says a former SDNY prosecutor. “And they’re both sitting in jail”
reported that SDNY prosecutors have been asking questions about Giuliani since at least August and have been combing his financial records, apparently following the money to see if the $500,000 Giuliani was paid by Parnas’s company, the exquisitely named Fraud Guarantee, originated with a Russian source. “It’s relatively easy to subpoena someone’s bank records,” saysa former chief of the SDNY’s organized crime and racketeering unit.
Giuliani’s growing headaches are political as well as legal. Yesterday Trump’s former top adviser on Russia and Europe, reportedly told congressional investigators that her boss, former national security adviserlabeled Giuliani “a hand grenade who’s going to blow everybody up” by meddling in Ukraine, and that Bolton was so alarmed by Giuliani’s conduct that he instructed Hill to notify the chief lawyer for the National Security Council.
Trump fired Bharara as head of the SDNY in March 2017 and later installed Berman, a Republican who had donated to Trump’s 2016 campaign. Berman is also a former law partner of Giuliani’s, at Greenberg Traurig, but the two men don’t seem to have much of a relationship. The SDNY is famously independent of its bosses at Main Justice, in Washington, but no one is quite sure where the lines are under Attorney Generalwho has been fiercely protective of Trump.
