Amy Shoenthal is the author of The Setback Cycle, a book about how today's most extraordinary founders and leaders persevere through setbacks.

Approximately 20% of all small businesses fail in the first year. Less than 30% make it to year ten, and of course, the numbers dip down further when it comes to women and minority-owned businesses.

The co-founders started their partnership by making a list of all the things they wanted to change about traditional PR agencies. They noticed so many clients being “bait and switched” as traditional firms lured them in with promises of high-profile placements and senior-level executive support, only to hire an overextended, inexperienced team to work on the business once the contract was signed.“The PR agency model was not working,” says Meyer.

“That’s how you make it work with a business partner,” Meyer says. “We were values-driven. We knew family and health would always come first. We both cared about women’s rights, voting, healthcare, and I just cared that Melissa was a good person at her core. That was much more important to me than which side of the business we each ran.”

“We have an executive team of four mothers,” Meyer says, “Each of us has very different skill sets and backgrounds, which has allowed us to foster a workplace that is uniquely and diversely qualified to cater to the dynamic media landscape we find ourselves in today, all while staying true to our decade-long mission to amplify and support the lives of women and their families.”

When asked if any of these office hours requests turned into full time clients, both founders shook their heads. They explained that the purpose of the effort wasn’t to create a client pipeline. While they could not share exact revenue numbers, the founders say their work generated over $1 Billion in venture capital for their clients, with one growth-stage client attributing a quarterly revenue of over $2M to the earned media work the firm did on their behalf.
