Canada’s requirement that travellers from China, Hong Kong or Macao show proof of a negative COVID test remains in effect

“until further notice,” Health Canada spokesperson Tammy Jarbeau said via email. “Any changes will be announced in due course.”

Three years in, COVID remains an international health threat, though the pandemic is also “probably at a transition point,” WHO director general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in late January. Others aren’t so convinced. “We’ve been through a three-year global crisis,” said Western University’s Marnie Wedlake. “It would be really hard not to have this play on the psyche of most individuals.”

Normally there’s a 17-year gap between research, the time something is discovered, and when it’s implemented. With COVID, “we were getting information almost as it came out of the petri dish,” Wedlake said. “’Here’s the latest variant; here’s the mask you should wear when you’re on an airplane.’
