local activists are fighting to preserve their communities and protect longtime residents ⤵️
“I've had a really hard time with artists in Chinatown because they see Chinatown as an,” says TiDo. “The people that infuriate me the most are fellow Asian American artists, who are my people — they are absolutely complicit in the harm that is coming to Chinatown by refusing to see the class-based harm that they are committing.”
Fellow CCED member Anahy Brenda H., a Chinatown resident from a multigenerational L.A. family, recalls seeing a similar situation in Echo Park: “It [felt like] overnight, no one in our prior community was there anymore. The only thing that they kept was our art. They got rid of the people but decided to keep our culture. Living as a resident in Chinatown [now], I see the same thing happening here.
CAAAV organizer Alina Shen, however, emphasizes recognizing how developers and local governments are at the root of displacement, and that appealing to folks’ shared understanding can help gain support for their cause. “From my orientation, the people moving into the neighborhood are not targets," Shen says. "Because what's creating conditions for gentrification is structural, all of our energy should be put toward targeting developers.
For these organizers, the collective target is securing tenant rights, particularly for the low-income and working-class, and it transcends identity-based representation to the deeper paradigm of class inequity. According to Lynn Ta, a labor lawyer and CCED member, when white artists encroach on the community, it “looks more like racism as spectacle” and can more easily garner attention.
More young organizers are now entering this fight with that understanding. High schooler Weijun was inspired to join CCED after a friend told him about getting stuck in an elevator while visiting his grandparents at L.A.’sreported is filled with broken laundry facilities, dimly lit stairwells, and malfunctioning elevators. But Cathay Manor is not an anomaly: Residents of a single-room occupancy apartment building atSince L.A.
