Nearly 100 officials from 38 Alabama schools are celebrating an accomplishment four years in the making: Improving student achievement enough to get off of the federal school improvement list. See what schools came off the list:

As Kool and the Gang’s “Celebrate” played on the video call, “Good mornings” came virtually from all parts of Alabama.

“The grit, the perseverance, the sweat, the tears, all of that - it paid off,” Dr. Melissa Shields said as she opened the celebration, acknowledging that getting off that list is a badge of honor. “They all talked about people and how people helped them make a difference. They talked about having strong leadership in the building,” Dr. Marcy Burroughs, one of the state’s nine improvement specialists, said. “They talked about providing home school libraries for students, alumni even coming back providing support to the schools and donating their money.”

“Look in the mirror first, before you do anything else,” principal coach Dale Hancock said of his group’s advice to current and future schools targeted for improvement, “and have real conversations.”“Change takes time,” school improvement coordinator Taurus Smith said. “This is not going to happen overnight.”
