Buttery orzo, you're so comforting.
I never met a buttered noodle I didn’t like, but my buttered starch of the moment is orzo. The quick-cooking, rice-shaped pasta is a childhood favorite, my mom used to bring orzo pasta salad with shrimp to picnics, potlucks, and other groups events. I couldn’t get enough. Because it’s small and grain-like, orzo works well in soups and salads, but I prefer it hot out of the pot with just butter and salt. It doesn’t get more comforting than that., orzo is actually a pasta shaped like a grain.
You don’t see orzo on many restaurant menus, and that's because it’s distinctly less fashionable than other pasta shapes like bucatini or orecchiette. But it’s as comforting as any comfort food out there. Sorry egg noodles, orzo is what I want underneath and next to all the soupy braises, meaty gravies, and crispy cutlets this year. Orzo is what I'm all about.
