Climate and weather conditions in the Texas Hill Country have significantly impacted this year's peach yields, according to researchers and area peach farmers.

People from all over Texas buy and sell peaches in Fredericksburg, which produces peaches known for a unique flavor attributed to the minerals in the soil from the nearbyStein and Barrett Jenschke from Jenschke Orchards said peach trees in the Hill Country need about 900 hours during the dormant season to produce a full crop. To compare, a peach tree in Houston requires about 300 to 400 chill hours to produce the most peaches.
"This past winter we were very mild and didn't start to get some cold weather until the end of December," Stein said."It appears that even though we may have had enough hours, it came too late and the chill wasn't as effective as it should have been." "Another factor was last year's drought," Jenschke said."We have been in a severe drought most of last year, but getting better now.", at least a year ago, Gillespie County, which encompasses parts of the Hill Country, was under the most severe drought categorized.
