He's seen the vast range of societal and individual problems that feed homelessness, and he is under no delusions that there is a catch-all solution for it. "You have so many needs," he said."You see how the system oppresses people, but also how people oppress themselves."He still fumes about city officials who dole out tax abatements to wealthy corporations and developersTo protest this, he once sought an abatement for a proposed room addition to his house, which he promised would be used as a"research and training center.
He directs those he sees as shirking their moral obligations to a passage from the Bible, specifically Matthew 25: 31-40. You know the verse: I was hungry and you fed me, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.... Beittel, who attended seminary with Witte, and was quite possibly the fiercest and most forthright advocate for the homeless in central Ohio.
"Complacency in our community is a very dangerous thing," Beittel said 30 years ago, in 1992."As long as Gary is around, I don't think we are in danger of becoming too complacent."
