Softball NL has over 1,300 female players in the province this summer
In 2021, Softball Newfoundland and Labrador counted 975 female players in their talent pool. That number jumped to 1,153 in 2022.
Last year, Twillingate hosted a 15-and-under male tournament and this summer the town fielded two female teams in the same age group.“I think what we've done is we've had tournaments, especially slo-pitch in other regions of the province, so, in Gander, Twillingate, Port aux Basques, those areas. So, I guess the kids are seeing it and coming out more and more,” said Feener.
Athletes who enter that program get access to quality training that has helped them succeed at the eastern Canadian levels, and officials believe it is only a matter of time before they’re seeing national success as well. “We’re getting more involvement and more interest off the Avalon just because the girls are better ballplayers,” said Davis.Having somewhere to continue playing after their minor softball days is also a key in keeping players involved.
