When we think about cybersecurity breaches, it’s not a stretch to imagine that a large portion of attacks over the next decade will be related to failures of older, legacy equipment. To prevent this future from coming to pass, security professionals and governments must examine breach history and apply lessons from past failures.During my time leading Israel’s Unit 8200, I witnessed malicious actors taking advantage of critical infrastructure and the private sector's legacy systems.
This is not a new problem, nor one that governments are unaware of. In 2019, the U.S. Government Accountability Office released ahighlighting the 10 most critical legacy systems that needed modernization. These legacy systems serve as the foundation’s key federal departments, including the Department of Defense and Homeland Security. Some of these legacy systems have been in place for decades, and yet there are no documented plans to modernize them in the short term.
While not a cyberattack, another example of aging systems is the January 2023 disruption of the Federal Aviation Administration’sIn truth, some of the most critical infrastructure was simply not designed to last as long as it has. Unfortunately, no one wants to touch it because it still works, but as time goes on, they become increasingly fragile, and no one wants to be left holding the bag when the other shoe drops.
The first step is to locate and identify these aging systems and triage them accordingly. While it may seem like a simple enough first step, it’s likely to be labor-intensive as each system is assessed and vetted for vulnerabilities and other issues.
