'Make no mistake: The Warriors are making a loud statement here, and it’s an ugly one. It’s also just a massive, ineffable bummer.'
I’m not in the habit of believing that professional sports is the sort of corner of the world where right and wrong are premium commodities, but at a certain point you just have to ask, what the hell is so special about this guy that Golden State is willing to act as a shield for a credibly accused rapist?
“Innocent until proven guilty” is a matter of law, not justice. As Lamb apologists continue to harp, the swingman out of Vermont is not the defendant in Ware’s lawsuit. UVM, according to Ware, in, badly mishandled the Title IX investigation against Lamb from the start, with numerous school officials giving her contradictory counsel regarding which avenue of recourse to pursue.
Read Ware’s testimony, if you have the stomach, both for the gaslighting from university officials and the graphic, impossible to unsee description of the alleged sexual assault. It’s disturbing but important reading; any discourse or decision around Lamb should come with full awareness of the particulars here.
And yet one wonders if Steve Kerr has sat down and perused the lawsuit. If he did, did he find the chilling description of Lamb telling Ware to “just take it” as something to be held to account for, or just regrettable collateral damage? Surely Bob Myers must have skimmed it.
Make no mistake: The Warriors are making a loud statement here, and it’s an ugly one. It’s also just a massive, ineffable bummer. Yet they’ve been screaming it all season, propping Lamb up in promotional materials and. Still, the move to invest further in Lamb feels mind-bogglingly obtuse for what’s usually a well-oiled propaganda machine. The problem here is one of morals and not public relations, but surely the Warriors have to be aware that the optics stink, too.
