“We had gone on a pretty good little run and I think now having them both in camp, you can feel the vibe,” added TFC president Bill Manning, after returning home from preseason last week. “You could see their personalities now because they’re more part of the group and you could see what fun Lorenzo is. Fede’s personality is huge. But you can see Lorenzo’s personality come out. He speaks better English. It’s connecting well.
Akinola, 23, managed four goals in 30 total appearances for TFC last season, coming back from 2021 ACL surgery. The Brampton native hopes to rediscover his past form that saw him score nine goals in 15 appearances in 2020. TFC signed eight new starting players in the off-season. But depth is a concern. DC United also made some changes in the off-season, but not the great splash the fan base was hoping for. The Black and Red are a bit of an unknown commodity at this point. Saturday’s match will be interesting in that the two teams have largely rebuilt their lineups, and it’s always tough for squads to prepare for an opponent for the first match of the year.
