The Title 42 immigration policy ends today. Here's what's happening in El Paso and the Texas border.
The congregation of about 1,000 asylum seekers had filed into threemost seated on blankets in the dusty terrain bordered by razor wire on one side and the imposing steel bollard “wall” on the other. The group functioned on an honor system that could only have been implemented by people with a shared goal and deep understanding of one another’s struggles — a border patrol van would arrive at irregular intervals to pick up a few dozen asylum seekers for processing, and the camp would applaud.
Hundreds of migrants shield themselves from a harsh dust storm, along the border wall where many crossed the Rio Grande from Ciudad Juárez to El Paso, they are hoping to seek asylum and enter the United States on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, on U.S. soil north of the Rio Grande and south of the border wall.
“If people tried to cross they would just get deported. After everything we’ve invested, all the money we’ve spent, just to be deported?” said Ilian Suarez, a 21-year-old from Venezuela. “It would all be for nothing.”
