The Hill Times
The Senate is often referred to as our nation’s Chamber of “sober second thought.” It is currently examining legislation that sorely requires it to protect our national interest. C-282, a Bloc Québécois private member’s bill, would prevent Canada from ever contemplating international trade concessions in sectors regulated through the system of supply management, specifically, eggs, dairy, and poultry products.
Why take the risk of attracting unwanted American attention for no strategic reason? Canada is currently engaged in other trade negotiations with Indonesia, the United Kingdom, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. In the future, we could see global negotiations at the World Trade Organization, with South American countries, or renegotiations of existing trade agreements with the European Union, Japan, or South Korea.
