If you want to land a higher salary, you need to start talking to your manager about how you can improve your performance and exceed the expectations of your role, rather than just meeting them, three to six months before your performance review.

During that meeting, you and your boss should jointly come up with a list of 2-3 actionable goals to get there. When it comes time for your performance review, "Walk in [to the meeting] and say, 'Six months ago, here's what we talked about,'" Sethi said. "'I achieved those things, and I've been updating you [on my progress].'"
