Among the most vulnerable of all are the millions of ‘zero-dose’ children, who have not received a single shot of any of the vaccines provided through their national childhood routine immunization programs, leaving them vulnerable to many preventable
diseases, such as tetanus and pertussis. Even before the pandemic there were 13 million zero-dose children, but today, following the devastating disruption that COVID-19 has caused to health systems, that number has risen to 18 million — an increase of 37%.
