As the nation endures historically high gasoline prices, the pain drivers feel at the...

Diego Davalos, owner of Houston Affordable Movers, fills one of his trucks with diesel Monday, May 16, 2022 in Houston. Diesel prices are at record-breaking highs, forcing truckers, farmers and fishermen to raise prices and scale back their operations to recoup costs. Some, like Davalos, have lost business as they raise prices to cover soaring transportation costs.

The pressure to refine enough diesel and the loss of Russian supplies “are kind of feeding on each other,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for fuel tracking website GasBuddy. Demand for goods, which ran hot during and after the pandemic, is already cooling as inflation squeezes family budgets, according to financial services firm Moody’s, which downgraded the national retail outlook to “negative” Monday. Retailers won’t be able to continue passing along their rising costs, Moody’s predicted, while “food and energy costs are eating into consumer wallets.”

“It’s very burdensome,” Saporito said. To stay afloat, he added, he charges customers more and cuts costs when he can. Geovanni Aquirre, a generator repair technician for Waukesha Pearce, said filling his utility truck twice a week with diesel has doubled to about $144 compared with $70 to $80 last year. The company has instituted fuel surcharges to help cover costs, he said, noting that customers have so far been understanding.Passing along soaring fuel costs can be a struggle for some smaller operators.

In addition to rising transportation costs, high diesel prices make it harder for farmers and fishermen to fuel their equipment at profitable rates. Buddy Guindon, owner of Katie’s Seafood and one of the largest fishing operations out of Galveston, said high diesel price are “devastating” for fuel-intensive shrimp fishing, which requires towing heavy nets along the ocean floor. He said he’s stopped fishing for shrimp altogether.
