A satirical workplace thriller about Black women trying to maintain their dignity amid viperous office politics and limousine liberals.

and while that may be reductive, it’s not inaccurate. Maybe it’s closer to “The Devil Doles Out Microaggressions.”Sinclair Daniel captures Nella’s wonderful blend of nerdiness and down-to-earth sincerity, trying to keep her head above water at a job that is all but ready to drown her. She’s thoughtful and smart and frustrated. “Don’t let this place suck the life out of you,” a co-worker says. But something isabout that office.

Her boss is breezily demanding, and just as breezily resistant to any of Nella’s suggestions to bring in Black authors. Or rethink a problematic manuscript from one of their star white writers. Nella is forever being asked to compromise her principles and bite her tongue. But once Hazel is in the cubicle next to her, the newbie goads Nella to stand her ground as they share pointed looks of recognition. “If you have any questions ...” Nella says when they’re first introduced.

This becomes apparent when Nella comes into contact with a secret society that might be turning Black women into the Talented Tenth equivalent of Stepford wives. It’s a very glossy and tightknit group that is infiltrating white power structures and blazing trails.

Suddenly the story plunges into magical realism and ups the ante from the specific tension and intrigue of this one workplace to a larger, conspiracy-flavored narrative. But this part of the narrative isn’t developed enough to fully make sense. The genre shift ends up distracting from, rather than deepening, all the wonderful observations of the season’s first half about Nella and Hazel’s tricky interpersonal negotiations.

Still, there’s so much to like about this series, from the deft performances to the look of the show itself, which spends most of its time inside Wagner’s sleek offices. All those sharp right angles might as well be a visual representation of the ways Nella’s ambitions have been down to size at every turn. Until now.
