As the Percy Jackson and the Olympians release date inches closer, Riordan expresses his excitement for the series in an interview with EW, which was conducted before the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Riordan affirms his substantial involvement in the show creatively, teasing that it will serve as a proper live-action retelling of his popular story. Check out Riordan's full comment below:
"We have been involved in the series since its inception, since the very, very earliest conversations about what a new Percy adaptation might look like, how it would be sketched out, whether it would be episodic. So, I feel comfortable telling fans of the books who have been waiting — in some cases, decades — for this kind of faithful adaptation, that this is the one you've been waiting for. We are involved and I think you're gonna love it.
Riordan's feelings about the two Percy Jackson movies are now quite well-known, with the author previously taking to the blog on his website to outline all that went wrong with the adaptations. Riordan expressed his misgivings regarding the scripts to the studio early on in the process, outlining the changes that he would make, but his creative input was essentially ignored. Most of the changes would have made the story and characters closer to how they were portrayed in his books.
Now, however, the Percy Jackson Disney Plus series is set to right the wrongs of the past. Riordan serves as co-creator of the show with Jonathan E. Steinberg and he had a hand in writing the episodes. Even from the early Percy Jackson and the Olympians trailers, it's clear that the show will be more faithful to the books, including starring younger actors as the three leads and featuring a tone more accessible to younger audiences.
