When a mammogram shows abnormalities in the breast tissue, patients must have additional imaging and often a biopsy to test for cancer. If no cancer is found in the year after the initial abnormal mammogram, it’s considered a false positive. The process can be stressful for patients, which is why some medical professionals have urged against early testing.But many of us in the breast cancer surgery community disagreed with the recommendation of starting mammograms at age 50.
We think this is a positive development. But the recommendation is still for every other year screening, which many of us think should be annual.
