Since 2011, the Higher Education Coordinating Board has collected degree program data as a part of its annual almanac which provides profiles on all public two-year and four-year institutions in the state. The almanac compiles institutional data on Texas’ progress toward the state’s– the state’s strategic plan for 60% of Texans to earn a certificate or degree by 2030.
Despite rising popularity, degrees in healthcare – the second most-popular field of study in 2021 – were awarded at a much lower rate than business and marketing degrees. Undergraduates were nearly twice as likely to earn a bachelor degree in business or marketing than in a healthcare field. Other popular fields for Texas undergraduates include interdisciplinary studies, engineering, and biological sciences.
Like schools throughout the state, business and engineering programs were top choices at San Antonio-area public universities in 2021. However, other top program choices differed from statewide trends. For example, at Texas State University, popular programs included communications and fitness studies, while psychology ranked in the top choices for undergraduates at both The University of Texas at San Antonio and Texas A&M University-San Antonio.
