New TheMightyDucksGameChangers star Josh Duhamel discusses taking over the Disney+ series from Emilio Estevez: 'It was a little intimidating.'
Josh Duhamel, who is starring in The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers season 2 following Emilio Estevez's exit, opens up about taking on the intimidating role. Game Changers debuted in 2021, bringing Estevez back as Gordon Bombay. The series saw Bombay running a hockey rink while he reluctantly stepped back into his coaching role for a new group of young outcasts.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Estevez exited The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers prior to season 2, leaving big shoes to fill for a new actor. Duhamel was then cast as Colin Cole, a former NHL player who became a coach much like Bombay. However, season 2 offers a change of scenery for The Mighty Ducks, who find themselves in California at an intense summer hockey institute run by Duhamel's Cole.
"Because this is a pretty storied franchise and has a lot of history, and Emilio did such an amazing job all those years playing Gordon Bombay, it was a little intimidating. But at the same time, I was in another world compared to where they were, so they were coming into my world, too. It felt like I had my own domain to make my own mark. I didn’t have to live up to any other expectations, so that was scary but challenging. It was one of those jobs that turned out to be just a blast.
Emilio Estevez's Mighty Ducks Exit Explained Estevez was initially meant to return for The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers season 2, as the first season set up his story to continue, even giving his character a romantic relationship with Lauren Graham's Alex Morrow, the mother of the Ducks' star player Evan. However, Estevez reportedly did not comply with the studio's COVID-19 vaccine mandate, which led to tensions with Disney.
Game Changers season 2 was altered to write Estevez's Bombay out of the series. As Duhamel alludes to, allowing for a change of location also makes his absence easier to explain, given that the character was such a prominent part of the show. How much time the series dedicates to explaining Bombay's absence remains to be seen. However, Duhamel's Cole should make for an excellent change of pace and give the series a thrilling new edge.
