The Met Police report proves the force is rotten – but there is cause for optimism ✒️ y_alibhai for ipaperviews
A new report on the Metropolitan Police by Baroness Louise Casey. Its verdict: public trust is ebbing away; the institution is riddled with racism, homophobia and misogyny; police crimes are covered up; and there is little accountability.
No, I’m not going soft. Yes, I know Met officers with obnoxious views still tyrannise peers and too many Londoners with impunity. But hitherto, their victims were mostly from minority populations – black people, Muslims, other Asians, LGBT women and men. That was why so many Britons turned a blind eye or disbelieved them. British cops, to them, were beyond reproach, the best in the world.
I just heard the academic Konstancja Duff on BBC Radio 4. She was detained and strip-searched in 2013 after trying to offer a 15-year-old a card with the names of legal advisers during a stop-and-search. As they stripped her, male and female officers said she was “rank” and that her knickers smelt. They eventually apologised.
