Songwriting duo Thomas Mizer and Curtis Moore break down their work on TheMarvelousMrsMaisel season 5, including episode 4's trash can dap sequence, and the show's ipemding finale.
Warning: Spoilers for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 5, Episode 4The end is near for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Amazon’s hit period comedy-drama series, as the show reaches the end of season 5, its last. Created by Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, the show found a devoted audience early on thanks to its sharp writing, strong performances, and inviting concept.
But we really try to make an effort to see each other at least once a month, or once every other month, so we'll fly back and forth. With Maisel, and with writing in general, we're really good at collaborating via Zoom and throwing ideas, and then we will be together to do most of the work in New York City. We recorded all of it in New York City, so Tom was always here for that.
Thomas Mizer: I think the key word he just said was "quickly". The difference between our work in theater, which can take five to 10 years to maybe see something in front of people [and this is that] we had three weeks, between being told what the assignment specifically was for this episode and the first recording session.
I personally did not know industrial musicals existed until this came along. How much research, and digging, and finding references do you do before you tackle anything for the show? Then, for the trash musical, we were like, "These are the modern music theater writers of our day. They are the ones that are going to have the slightly dirtier lyrics, it's going to be edgier for that time, [and] it's going to be a lot of razzmatazz and dance." It was a real fun moment for us, to really embody three different teams and feel like we were sort of method writing, instead of method acting. That was a really fun challenge for us.
I really want to talk about the trash lid tap dancing, because that's just incredible. Did that come in after your part on this was done, or did you plan for that with your instrumentation? Thomas Mizer: It felt like a gift from Amy to us, in a way, because she was giving us the spine of the episode. If our stuff didn't work, and hopefully it does work for people, then the episode doesn't work as well. That was the first time we'd been given the keys to the car. Hopefully we didn't crash it, mom and dad.
