With early reviews starting to pile in, HBO's TheLastOfUs may defy the video game curse, as it holds a high Rotten Tomatoes score.
HBO's The Last of Us earns an incredible Rotten Tomatoes score and breaks the tradition of terrible video game adaptations. The show follows Joel and Ellie as they make their way through a chaotic post-apocalyptic world filled with zombie-like creatures. When Joel discovers that Ellie is secretly immune to the virus, he needs to find a way to get her to scientists across the country in the hopes of saving the entire world from devastation.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Rotten Tomatoes announced on Twitter that The Last of Us scored 100% on the Tomatometer with 26 reviews. As of this writing, the number dropped to 96% on Rotten Tomatoes' official site, but the score is still considerably high. While the Sonic franchise is one of few video game adaptations to find success, most video game-adapted movies and shows tend to struggle because of the sheer difficulty of constricting long gameplay time into a few hours. But the early critical reactions prove that The Last of Us is a highly successful adaptation – a surprising feat as it is largely unique. How Does Last Of Us Compare To Other Video Game To Film Adaptations? Unfortunately, adapting video games isn't always an easy process.
Typically, adaptations focus on concepts rather than characters. Since video games are more interactive than movies or shows, it can be difficult to draw a three-dimensional and compelling character from games. The Last of Us diverts from games such as Destiny or World of Warcraft by having realistic characters with established personalities and complex motivations that lend well to even visual mediums.
Another benefit that The Last of Us has over other video game adaptations is the story's familiarity. While Bioshock needs long explanations to introduce its unique concept, zombie movies and TV shows have grown increasingly popularized over the years. While HBO show might need to explain clickers, the idea of zombies — and immunity to the zombie virus — isn't exactly an unfamiliar trope.
