The mainstream appeal of white men has always flourished over men of color largely because we have been taught that white men are the gold standard of attractiveness. They’re who we put on billboards modeling dapper clothes, who are selected to grace the cover of magazines, who get to play the hero in movies and television. In some ways, Twitter’s white boy of the month is satirical and self-aware — it admits that whiteness is almost always the standard.
