The Palm Spring desert's aerial tramway can turn a sweltering heat into a brisk afternoon in a matter of minutes.
Suspended thousands of feet above the ground, I can feel the cool air rush through the small open windows of the aerial tram I’m standing inside. On this October day, the temperature outside has changed from a hot 90 degrees on the desert floor to a comfortable 60 degrees in just a matter of minutes. I’m glad I brought a jacket. I drove to Palm Springs, 100 miles east of LA, to spend the day in the Mount San Jacinto State Park and Wilderness for the first time.
The path starts as a cement walkway that zigzags steeply downhill, and I can already tell by others’ faces going uphill that I’m going to hate walking back up it. But I’ll worry about that later. The park is a sprawling 14,000 acres with 50 miles of hiking trails and various campsites. The tramway is one of the easiest ways to enter the park. The other is through Idyllwild, another mountainous community about 47 miles away by car.
