The Heritage Society of Houston plans program ahead of Juneteenth
The Heritage Society will present a Juneteenth program on Saturday, June 17, with a focus on “From Plantation to Emancipation.”The presentation is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1100 Bagby St. in the museum gallery. The free event is sponsored by Constellation Energy.
According to The Heritage Society, speakers at its event include descendants of The Rev. Jack Yates, members from Trinity United Methodist Church, a Rice University student who will share the impact of slave migration, and a descendant of Roscoe A. Cavitt, the executive secretary of National Negro Chamber of Commerce.
Also, “Former board member Devaron Yates will share architectural features of the Yates House and current board member Martha Whiting-Goddard, the great granddaughter of Jack Yates, will be the emcee of the program,” said Minnette Boesel, The Heritage Society’s president.
