The cross-province trip left quite an imprint on Brown, who made it a point to come back again — and then again, and again, and again. Stepping foot on Stampede grounds this Saturday marked 75 years since Brown first visited the festival, with only a handful of years missed through the decades.Many Stampede staples, like pancake breakfasts, the parade and the rodeo have existed since the 1940s, but other elements like the busy midway and events programming grew alongside the Stampede’s rapid expansion as Calgary’s population ballooned post-war.
Family Day at the Stampede had thousands show up early as temperatures soared in Calgary on Sunday, July 9, 2023.And while Brown, who spent his life as a cattle farmer, continued his annual pilgrimage to the Stampede from Manitoba, he went from attending with his father to going with kids and grandkids of his own.“I’m just amazed that he’s still coming. He’s 90 years old and he’s determined to come here,” McLeod said., with plans to watch the fireworks to cap off the evening.
