The platform that Republicans will be using for 2020 opposes gay marriage, covertly endorses conversion therapy for LGBTQ youth—and attacks the “current president” more than three dozen times
occasions—attacks that likely read whole a lot better when Obama was in the Oval Office instead of Trump. While some of these damning mentions are clearly tied to Democratic policies, others paint a more broadly unflattering portrait of Obama-era America that can now inadvertently be used to undermine Trump.
The RNC’s decision to point to the existing platform and call it a day upends the Trump team’s existing efforts to revamp the Republican agenda for 2020. Axios, were working to streamline the sprawling document into a “single card that fits in people's pockets,” creating more of a “mission statement” than an exhaustive detailing of the party’s views.
While the decision to simply leave the platform as-is eliminates those specific concerns, Politico reports that the move has still managed to upset Republicans on both ends of the conservative spectrum—for entirely different reasons. Further-right conservatives are annoyed that the platform won’t take a clear stand against hot-button issues that have emerged since 2016, like transgender rights or police reform.
